Rain lashed against the windows as Maya stared at the empty space where her vintage Mustang used to sit. Disbelief warred with rising irritation. This was her own property, for heaven's sake! A tow truck company, of all things. Her gaze drifted to the house across the street. The elderly Mr. Henderson’s lawn always looked neglected, and his finances were rumored to be tight.

She pictured him, frail and lonely, facing this same situation. Her irritation softened, replaced by a deep ache. She felt her chest tighten. She knew how easily things could spin out of control when money was short. She decided she’d postpone her own call to the towing company, and go across the street first.
