The silence of the empty driveway echoed in Clara’s ears. Her car was gone. She felt a surge of indignation, instantly replaced by a wave of cold. She had a mountain of bills to pay and this felt like the last straw. She considered calling the towing company immediately.

But as she stepped back onto her porch, she saw the silhouette of Mr. Jenkins, the quiet, recently widowed neighbor across the street. He was standing in his doorway, looking lost. Clara imagined his confusion, his loneliness. The anger that had bubbled up within her slowly cooled. She'd deal with her own troubles later. She walked towards Mr. Jenkins' door.
