The harsh fluorescent light of the garage seemed to amplify the echo of her own footsteps. No car. Just a cold, empty space. This had to be a mistake. Sara felt a tremor run through her, and she had to clench her teeth to stop them from chattering. She had a job interview today.

Then she noticed the worn-out minivan belonging to the family two doors down, the family with the perpetually exhausted single mother. She knew that family was stretched thin. Sara took a deep breath. She wouldn’t call the towing company just yet. She felt a growing need to help the mother and her children. Instead, she sat down on the curb to collect herself and think of a plan.
