The request was from Emily Carter. Her heart sped up slightly. In the past, Emily had made her life miserable, a constant barrage of insults and sneers. Seeing Emily’s profile now – a picture of her with what appeared to be her ailing mother – something shifted within her.

The years had clearly taken a toll on Emily, lines etched on her face, the spark gone from her eyes. She imagined the woman struggling, her life probably not what she had expected. She clicked "Accept" and wrote, “Hey Emily, long time no see. How are you doing?”
