The flickering candlelight danced across the walls, illuminating Maya’s face as she struggled with a complex grammar exercise. David, who usually had his nose buried in a book, emerged from the living room. She glanced up, surprised. He sat down beside her, a worn notebook in his lap.

He began to read aloud, haltingly, in her native language. Each word was a struggle, each sentence imperfect, but the effort, the clear desire to connect with her heritage, filled her. She reached over, gently taking his hand. "Don't stop," she whispered, her voice thick. "Keep going." A warmth blossomed in her chest.
