Gemotions

Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through a crack in the attic window. Martha coughed, waving a hand in front of her face as she surveyed the space. Old trunks overflowed, their brass clasps tarnished, and a scattering of forgotten toys lay scattered across the warped floorboards. She picked up a small, wooden rocking horse, its paint chipped and faded. A wave of melancholy washed over her.

She carefully placed the horse on a sturdy crate, then opened the nearest trunk. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed linens, she found a collection of photographs. Smiling faces, families posed in front of a house that was now hers. She traced the faces with a gentle finger, feeling a connection to these strangers who had once lived within these walls.

She spent the entire afternoon sorting through the items, cataloging them gently. She found a child's collection of seashells and a worn, leather-bound diary filled with elegant handwriting. Martha decided to create a special box for the keepsakes, knowing she couldn't just throw them away.
