The peeling wallpaper in the hallway felt like a map of her grandmother’s life. Each stain, each tear, told a story. Her brother, David, was busy making a list of contractors to get rid of the "eyesore". She picked at a loose piece, revealing the faded blue underneath. She remembered the way Grandma would always tell her stories about the house.

She saw the chipped paint, but she saw something else: the history of this place. She wanted to preserve it. She realized that she wasn't just inheriting a house; she was inheriting a legacy of life.

The thought of bulldozing all of this felt abhorrent to her. She pictured David, who always needed things to be clean and neat. She knew that this was more important, and that she’d have to convince him to see the same thing.

"David," she said, her voice softer than usual, "I don't think we should change this too much."
