The silence in the house was deafening. His sister, Charlotte, was a whirlwind of energy, buzzing with plans for renovations. He walked through the rooms, letting his fingertips trail along the walls. The wallpaper felt rough and worn, but to him, it was a tactile map of his grandmother’s life. He remembered how much love she had poured into this home.

He entered the kitchen, the scent of the spices and herbs that his grandmother always kept in the spice rack still lingered in the air. He remembered the aroma of her cooking, the taste of her apple pie. He felt a deep sense of loss.

He pictured the garden, the roses his grandmother had carefully tended. He knew he needed to make sure they were taken care of.

He knew he wouldn't be able to just uproot her house from his life. He decided he would have to make a stand. He felt an obligation to the past.

"Charlotte," he said, his voice quiet, "Let's… let's not change anything just yet."
