The adoption papers had always been tucked away, a sealed box in the attic. Sarah had found the documents accidentally, a few weeks before the DNA results arrived. She had started the test with a simple curiosity, but the discovery of her birth family opened up more questions than answers. The test revealed a half-sister, living in a foster home just a few hours away. Sarah was a therapist. She knew about trauma, knew about the system, knew about the struggles of those who never knew their mothers. She immediately contacted the foster agency. "I just want to meet her," she explained, her voice soft, "to see if she needs anything." She didn't want to replace anyone. She simply wanted to offer a soft landing.
