Maya sank into her chair, the harsh fluorescent lights of the university cafeteria amplifying the hollowness inside her. The envelope had confirmed her worst fear. The scholarship, the key to her dreams, had been a mistake. Someone else needed it. She felt a prickling sensation in her eyes, a familiar sting she stubbornly fought down.

She knew she could fight it, argue, but a sense of unease settled over her. She knew the sacrifices her parents had made for her education, the late nights, the financial stress. She could probably find a job, maybe take out more loans. But… someone else might not have those options.

She thought of the application essays she had read, the stories of need, the struggle. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had to do something. She needed to know who this other person was.

The next day, she found a handwritten note in her mailbox. "Meet me at the fountain, 3 pm." No name, just a simple request. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she wondered who could've sent it.
