Liam paced his small, cramped apartment, the notification still burning in his mind. He’d received the news in the middle of a lecture. A scholarship mix-up. The relief he had felt when he got it had been replaced with a deep, unsettling unease. He wasn’t sure how to feel.

He remembered the financial struggles, the way his parents had scraped and saved. He could work more hours, he supposed, but that would leave him less time for studying. He had envisioned his whole future, the career he could now pursue.

He saw the faces of the classmates he had befriended, all working to make ends meet. He envisioned someone in a similar situation, but who might not have the same support network. A wave of heat rushed through him. A phone call seemed like the right thing to do.
