The news felt like a physical blow to Ben. A misallocation. His scholarship was no longer his. The initial shock had given way to a profound disquiet.

He could, of course, fight it. He could argue his case. But his thoughts kept returning to the other student, the one who was supposed to receive the funds. Someone he didn't know, someone he would probably never meet. But he felt connected to them somehow.

He thought of the sacrifices his own family made to put him through school. He thought of the other students he knew, the ones who were working multiple jobs just to stay afloat. He closed his eyes. He pictured a scenario and felt it needed to be rectified.

He decided what to do. He found the name of the professor in charge of the scholarship program. He crafted a carefully worded email.
