Gemotions

The smell of old paper and mothballs filled the air as I sifted through the old albums. My grandfather, the family patriarch, was painted in family history as a man of principle. But in the photographs, I found a different story. He was leaning into a woman with a genuine, carefree smile. I felt a lump in my throat, a pressure in my chest. I knew it must have taken a great deal for him to hide this part of himself. I imagined his regret, his sacrifices. I felt a profound connection to this man I never knew.

I gently closed the album. I thought of the stories I'd tell my own children.
