The basement was a cathedral of forgotten dreams, the air thick with the scent of mildew and decaying paper. Emily, her fingers trembling, held the letter. It was a plea, written to her younger sister, detailing her own struggles with addiction. She never sent it, afraid of exposing her shame. She’d stayed silent, until it was too late.

A lump formed in her throat as she read her own words of despair. She now had the chance to reach out to someone else in a similar situation, but she needed to be brave.
