The announcement had been a shock. Professor Davies, the man who had guided him through the intellectual labyrinth of his PhD, was leaving for a position at a different university. The world swam around Marcus as the realization sunk in.

He found himself walking towards the professor's office. The familiar route felt foreign, the sunlight glaring. As he approached the door, he noticed the professor packing up his books. The room looked hollowed out, the shelves now empty. A wave of sorrow, not for himself, but for the professor, washed over him.

Without a word, Marcus took a box and started sorting through the papers. He found himself picking out photos of past students. He held them up, silently showing them to the professor, who nodded slowly. He understood, without either of them having to speak.
