The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a monotonous drone that matched the churning in Amelia's stomach. She knew she was up against David for the Senior Project Manager position. They'd both poured their hearts into the last quarter's projects. Seeing David’s slumped shoulders as he walked past her desk, she felt a pang.

He’d been working late every night, skipping lunches. She imagined him worrying, the same way she had been.

Later, she found herself walking to his cubicle. “Hey David,” she said quietly, her voice softer than usual. “Listen, I just wanted to say, no matter what happens, you’ve done a stellar job on the Phoenix project. Seriously, you should be proud.” She offered a small smile, and hoped it conveyed more than just words.

David looked up, surprised. His eyes, usually bright, were clouded with fatigue. He managed a weak smile in return. "Thanks, Amelia. I appreciate that."
