Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the bleakness Elena felt. She and Marcus were both in the running. The stakes were high. The promotion meant a significant salary increase, the sort that could change everything for her small family. Marcus, she knew, was supporting his elderly parents and a younger sister.

She observed him throughout the day. He seemed distracted, his usual booming laugh absent. He kept running a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture she recognized all too well.

After the announcement, she saw him standing alone near the water cooler. His head was down. Elena walked over, feeling a weight in her own chest. “Marcus,” she began gently. “Listen, this is tough news. But you know you’re one of the best engineers here. Don't let this diminish how skilled you are."

He looked up, his jaw clenched. He nodded slowly. “Thanks, Elena,” he mumbled.
