Gemotions

The office buzzed with congratulations. Michael clapped Liam on the back, a forced smile plastered on his face. He knew his rival for the Marketing Director position was feeling a mix of relief and exhilaration. He saw the way Liam’s shoulders rose and fell with a visible ease he hadn't displayed in weeks.

Michael felt a strange ache in his chest. He noticed Liam's usually impeccable tie was askew.

As the day wore on, he kept thinking about Liam's late nights and the sacrifices he had made. He saw him talking to several colleagues, his smile was strained, his eyes, momentarily empty. Then, he went over to Liam's desk, and casually leaned, asking if he could buy him a coffee.

"Liam," he began, attempting a casual tone. "Hey, congrats again. You really earned it."

Liam flashed a quick smile, which immediately disappeared. "Thanks, Michael." He then paused, his eyes met Michael's. "I appreciate that."
