The office went wild. The email announced the promotion, and it went to Brian. Across the room, Sarah, his coworker, sat with her head in her hands, her shoulders shaking. They had both been working towards the same goal, their lives intertwined in this competition.

Brian felt a wave of… something that felt like a weight. He saw Sarah's dedication, her unwavering focus, the sacrifices she’d made. He noticed her red eyes, and a muscle twitched in his jaw.

Later, he walked over to her desk. He didn't say anything at first, just stood there, awkwardly. Then, he began "Sarah, congratulations on the project. Listen, I know this sucks. But you did great things."

He paused, then added, "Really."
