The news flashed across the company-wide Slack channel: Peter was the new Regional Director. Across the room, Carol stared at her screen, her face a mask of disappointment. They'd both invested so much.

Peter watched her, his stomach twisting into a knot. He knew the pressure she'd been under, the late nights, the stress. He saw the way she fought for every client, the passion she brought to the role. He remembered her dedication, and her kind smile.

He found her standing by the coffee machine, her back to him. He approached her, and said in a soft voice, "Carol, congrats on the project. You did great."

She turned, her eyes red. "Thanks, Peter."

He continued, "You were brilliant with the Orion account. Seriously. You did great." He paused, then added, “You're amazing. Honestly.”
