Gemotions

Jessica was visibly upset. She'd been in tears at her desk. Word on the grapevine was that her dog, her beloved companion, was seriously ill.

Mark, who had been listening to music, turned off his headphones.

He walked over to her desk, the movement slow and careful, as if approaching a skittish animal.

"Hey," he said softly. "I heard about your dog. I’m so sorry."

Her shoulders slumped further.

"I know it's probably not much," he continued, "but if you need anything at all, anything, just ask. Okay?" He wanted to offer more, but he couldn’t find the words, so he just stayed in place, offering to support her.
