The news had just broken – their colleague, Ben, had lost his apartment in a fire. The office was abuzz with hushed whispers.

Chloe immediately thought of his easy smile and his unwavering positivity. It felt wrong to just carry on with the usual routine.

She started collecting donations. She didn’t want to ask anyone directly. She put a note up in the break room, and left it there for people to add to it.

Later, she baked a large batch of brownies and left them on his desk with a note offering her condolences.
