The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Clara knelt, sifting through a trunk overflowing with her mother’s belongings. Lace doilies, moth-eaten shawls, the scent of lavender sachets – all remnants of a life she barely knew. Then, nestled beneath a stack of old photographs, she found it. A crisp, yellowed envelope bearing her mother’s elegant handwriting. Inside, a typed letter, a draft. The subject: resignation. Dated 1982. A chill prickled her skin.

She smoothed the paper, her fingers tracing the faded ink. It was addressed to the headmistress of a prestigious girls’ school. The reasons given were vague, couched in polite language, but the underlying sentiment was clear: a desire for change, a yearning for something more. Her mother had always been a quiet woman, dedicated to her family.

Clara imagined her, young and uncertain, composing this letter. The weight of the decision, the courage it must have required. The woman in the photos seemed so different, younger. Clara could imagine the doubts, the fears. A wave of tenderness washed over her. She gently folded the letter, a tear escaping her eye, and carefully placed it back into the envelope.
