Rain lashed against the window as David unfolded the letter. It was from his father, addressed to a law firm, dated 1978. A plea. He'd never known his father to beg. The carefully worded sentences detailed financial struggles, the desperate need for a better salary, a more stable future. David's chest felt heavy, a dull ache settling in his gut.

He read between the lines, picturing his father, a young man, facing adversity. He’d built a reputation for stoicism. David knew the pain his dad must have concealed, the strain that must have worn on him. He remembered the long hours his father worked, the way he always provided.

David leaned back in his chair, the letter clutched in his hand. He understood now, the source of his father's gruff exterior, his dedication. He had to honor it, and somehow, help him. David stood and went to his father’s study, wanting to speak, to comfort him, to tell him he understood.
