Gemotions

The notice, crisp and official, fluttered on Mrs. Gable's door. Leo saw her squint at it, the fluorescent hallway light catching the worry etched around her eyes. He knew Mrs. Gable, a retired librarian, was on a fixed income. He knocked softly.

"Everything alright, Mrs. Gable?" he asked, his voice gentle. He felt a familiar tightening in his chest.

She blinked, pushing her glasses up. "Oh, Leo. It's… this. About the building." Her hand trembled, indicating the notice. The paper seemed to wilt under her touch.

"Do you understand what it means?" he asked, already knowing. He'd done the research. He had a few extra dollars saved, thankfully.

He spent the next hour with her, going over the options, the deadlines. He called his own real estate agent and asked, hypothetically, about comparable properties. He didn't want to leave her to navigate this alone. The weight on her shoulders felt like a physical pressure on him, too. He hoped, for both of them, they could find a way.
