“This is a nightmare," I muttered, crumpling the notice in my hand. I lived on the top floor and the view was incredible. My rent was relatively cheap. I thought about the other tenants: the young couple starting a family, the elderly woman who spent her days tending to her balcony garden.

I walked down the hall, my heart heavy, and knocked on Mrs. Flores's door. I knew she had a soft spot for cats. I saw her face fall when I told her about the building going condo.

"I need help," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her cats were her companions. She couldn't afford a place with such steep pet deposits.

I took a deep breath. I knew the rules were strict, so I wouldn’t be able to adopt one myself. “Let’s find some places together,” I said. “And, if need be, I can always take care of them for you while you move.” I knew this was the start of something big.
