The vibrant colors of the community garden, usually a source of joy for David, now seemed muted, their brightness dimmed by the shadow of the condo conversion. He knew how much the elderly residents depended on the garden for food and social interaction.

He sat on the bench, watching Mr. Ito, carefully tending his tomatoes. Mr. Ito was struggling to get the news. David walked over and sat next to him.

"This is going to be difficult, isn't it?" he asked, his voice low.

Mr. Ito sighed, his shoulders slumping. He looked up, his eyes glassy.

David spent the next hour explaining the situation. He promised to help them organize and fight. He would make sure they preserved their community. He would do whatever he could. He would not let the garden be destroyed.
