“Fantastic,” Mark spat, his voice laced with acid. He watched the final boarding call of the flight he was supposed to be on, then sank into a chair, the plastic cold against his back. He had sacrificed his vacation time for his brother's graduation. He had even managed to get through the grueling meeting that morning.

He glared at the gate attendant, who, unfazed, continued with her routine. Her bland assurances were a waste of breath. This woman had no idea what she'd ruined. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger, the feeling of being cheated. He opened his briefcase and tossed the congratulatory card into the trash.
