From across the ballroom, Alex watched Liam take a bite of cake. He chewed slowly, savoring it, a look of pure, unadulterated enjoyment on his face. Alex felt a distinct twitch in his left eye.

He’d almost tripped on his way to the buffet table. The food was terrible anyway, but it provided a convenient diversion. He piled his plate high with mini quiches and tiny sausages, shoving them in his mouth as if they were the enemy.

The air conditioning seemed to be on overdrive. He tugged at the collar of his shirt, suddenly feeling suffocated. He imagined the wedding was some kind of elaborate performance meant to torment him.
