He had a new cologne. A cheap, cloying scent that clung to his clothes like a second skin. It was a stark contrast to the familiar, comforting fragrance she had grown accustomed to. He was suddenly overly generous, overly attentive, as if trying to buy her off. Liam's stomach churned with a mixture of anger and nausea.

She walked past his office door and heard hushed tones and giggling. She stopped, but did not enter. The door frame felt like a cage. She took a deep breath, and forced herself to continue walking.

Later, he came to bed. She turned her back to him, the space between them a tangible barrier. His touch felt unwelcome, his words meaningless.
