The invitation arrived in the mail, embossed with gold lettering. *“An Evening with the Artist: A Retrospective of the Work of Victor Sterling.”* Sarah crumpled the elegant paper in her fist, the gesture almost violent. Victor Sterling. Her ex-husband.

She'd built his career, curated his galleries, managed his affairs. She had been the force behind his success. He was just the pretty face. Now he was lauded as a visionary.

She felt the familiar sting of betrayal, a cold, hard knot forming in her stomach. She thought of the countless hours she had spent, the sacrifices she had made. He had taken her hard work, and she had gotten nothing.

She pictured the opening night gala, the champagne toasts, the glowing reviews. The thought made her want to weep. She considered going, confronting him, ruining the entire evening. But what would that accomplish? She threw the invitation in the trash.
