The book arrived in the mail: *“Conquering Cancer: A New Approach” by Dr. Elias Thorne.* Dr. Elias Thorne, of course. David felt a wave of heat wash over him, as if he were coming down with a fever.

He'd spent his career researching cancer. He had developed the revolutionary treatment. He had done all the work. Thorne, his research partner, had simply taken the data, changed a few things, and published it as his own.

He slammed the book onto the table. He felt a deep, weary ache in his bones. He knew Thorne's reputation was secure. He knew, everyone would believe him.

He felt utterly powerless. He wanted to destroy the book. He wanted to expose Thorne. He wanted to escape, leave everything behind. He stood up and took a long, heavy breath, his eyes fixed on the cover of the book. He would just have to live with it.
