He saw the dog tearing across the perfectly green lawn, a joyful, slobbering invader. Robert’s lips twisted into a thin, tight line. He’d spent the whole weekend working on his yard, making sure the grass was a perfect emerald carpet.

He pictured the dog’s owner, that oblivious man, probably still nursing a hangover, completely unconcerned with the damage. Robert felt a coldness spread through him. The sheer thoughtlessness, the blatant lack of respect for his property.

He picked up the newspaper, pretending to read, but his eyes were fixed on the canine trespasser. He’d have to say something. Again. He sighed heavily, the weight of the inevitable conversation already pressing down on him.
