"Welcome aboard!" The words, delivered with a syrupy tone from the new VP, made his skin crawl. Thomas stood at the back of the meeting room, arms crossed, face a mask of polite indifference. He watched the presentation, a slick display of corporate jargon and empty promises.

He wanted to interrupt, to question their motives, to expose the sham. But he held his tongue, knowing it would be a pointless exercise. He felt a knot of anger tighten in his stomach, a deep resentment for the entire charade.

He slipped out of the room as soon as he could, the forced cheer of the new management still ringing in his ears. He headed back to his desk, to the work he'd dedicated himself to for years. He’d just wait for his turn at the chopping block.
