The email notification chimed, a small, irritating sound that shattered the silence of her office. Lisa knew. She'd known it was coming, but that didn't lessen the blow. The acquisition was announced. The end was near.

She leaned back in her chair, the leather squeaking beneath her weight. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She felt the urge to start throwing things. The framed picture of her team, the awards, they all seemed like an insult.

She stared out the window, watching the traffic below. The world continued to spin, oblivious to the turmoil inside her. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, a potent mixture of anger and regret. She reached over, and switched her computer off.
