The detective had been surprisingly frank. “Shot in the study. Messy.” Mark, now standing in that very study, felt his face flush. He had planned on using the room as his personal library. Now he just felt violated.

He looked at the books, lined up neatly on the shelves, at the antique desk. They seemed to mock him, witnesses to a brutal act. He imagined the scene, the struggle, the fear.

He’d always considered himself to be somewhat sophisticated, above such things. Now, he found himself utterly repulsed by the whole situation. He turned and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
