"Oh, marvelous," Martin drawled, his voice thick with sarcasm. The real estate agent, a woman with teeth so white they practically glowed, beamed back at him. "Yes, isn't it exciting?" she chirped. He folded his arms, feeling the tremor in his hands. The air in the tiny, overpriced apartment suddenly felt stifling.

He leaned against the cracked linoleum floor, which he knew he'd have to pay to get refinished. The agents had already sent a list of improvements he could make. Improvements that were probably on the list of improvements that he'd have to make to get approved. He would have to sell his vintage record collection to even begin. He let out a long, slow breath.
