Sophie stretched, yawning languidly, after a wonderful night with Ben. The memory of his gentle touch, the way he made her laugh, filled her with a sense of warm security. She had spent the entire morning planning a dinner party for their friends; she loved the joy of sharing with those she treasured.

She answered a knock at the door, expecting a delivery. Instead, standing before her was a woman, holding a bottle of the expensive champagne Ben had bought for them last week. The woman was radiating confidence, or perhaps something else entirely. "Is Ben here?" she asked, her voice sharp.
