The gentle hum of the coffee machine, the scent of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven – John felt a sense of quiet satisfaction as he prepared breakfast. Sarah, his girlfriend, was still asleep, her presence a comforting warmth beside him. Their relationship had a solid foundation.

He heard a key in the lock, and a man he did not recognize walked into the apartment. The man smiled at him with a look of surprise. Both of them were wearing the exact same sweater that Sarah had given both of them last week, a gift she claimed was a "matching set."
