Michael stretched, the satisfying pop in his back chasing away the last vestiges of a long nap. The world felt good. The aroma of simmering stew drifted from the kitchen, promising a delicious supper. He glanced at the crossword puzzle he'd almost finished. His day felt solid, balanced, just right.

He was helping his mother sort through old documents when he unearthed a box of photos. One image showed his father, a man perpetually stoic in his memory, grinning goofily while riding a rollercoaster with a woman who was clearly not his mother.

"Well, now," Michael chuckled, a surprised thrill bubbling up. This new information, this discrepancy, didn’t shatter anything; it merely added colour. He felt a newfound appreciation for the complexities of life.
