The air grew stuffy, but Maria found herself strangely untroubled. The forced confinement, rather than being a burden, felt almost freeing. She watched as her coworker, Kevin, rattled the locked doors.

“It’s no use,” she said, her voice soft. She leaned against the wall, enjoying the feel of the cool metal against her skin. A small smile played on her lips.

She hummed a tune under her breath. A feeling of gentle ease settled over her. The silence, punctuated only by Kevin's increasingly frustrated grunts, was strangely comforting. This was a welcome change.
