The cramped space wasn't bothering John. He was fascinated by the intricate workings of the elevator shaft, visible through a small inspection panel. His coworker, Carol, was tapping her foot, looking increasingly anxious.

He offered her a smile. “Don’t worry, it’ll be fixed eventually.” He ran his hand over the smooth, cool metal of the wall. He felt a slow, pleasant warmth spreading through him.

He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. The scent of machine oil and dust was, strangely, quite nice. He felt a gentle, pleasant sensation rising in him. The enforced stillness was a gift. He was entirely at ease.
