The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a comforting scent that always calmed Amelia. She hummed a little tune as she kneaded the dough, feeling the satisfying give and take under her fingers. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Every morning, the ritual of baking brought her a specific, quiet joy.

The doorbell chimed, a familiar sound. It was Daniel, back a little early from his morning jog. He leaned against the doorframe, a strange mix of excitement and…something else…on his face. The air crackled with a tension Amelia couldn’t quite place.

"Remember that job offer I got in San Francisco?" he began, his voice barely above a murmur. "Well, I took it." A flush rose on his cheeks, and he fidgeted with the strap of his backpack. Amelia froze, the warmth in her chest beginning to drain away, replaced by something cold and unsettling. The dough felt suddenly heavy in her hands.
