A loud snapping sound shattered the silence. She nearly dropped her needles. Looking out the window, she saw Ms. Rodriguez's weeping willow, now lying in a heap across her lawn, blocking the driveway. Ms. Rodriguez stood frozen, a look of despair on her face.

Eleanor set down her knitting and crossed the yard. "Well, that's quite a change of scenery, isn't it?" she said, her voice gentle. "Let's figure out what to do, shall we?" The thought of offering support, of being useful, sparked a comfortable feeling inside her.
