He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking softly under his weight. Sunlight warmed his face as he surveyed the bustling art gallery. The opening night was a resounding success, his paintings hanging proudly amongst other artists. His work had been getting positive attention from critics and buyers alike.

The evening before, he had spent hours discussing his pieces. The energy of the crowd, the appreciation for his work, it all coalesced into an exquisite feeling. Now, sipping his coffee, he felt the memory of the night before settle in him like a comfortable blanket.

He pulled up the gallery website on his phone, scrolling through the online exhibit. There, nestled amongst the other works, was his essay. He’d completely forgotten he’d even submitted it! The application process felt so long ago. He hadn't thought about it in years. He scrolled past, feeling no real need to inspect it. The night before was proof of a new life.
