The bookstore felt claustrophobic. Maya, heart thrumming, scanned the shelves. There it was: “The Making of Maya Jones.” The irony almost choked her. She was a work in progress, not some finished product neatly packaged for consumption.

She snatched a copy from the shelf, feeling the paper crinkle under her grip. Inside, a version of herself she barely knew stared back. The author had crafted a tragic tale of overcoming obstacles, a narrative of triumph built on half-truths and exaggerations. Maya felt a surge of rage, her palms slick with sweat.

She marched to the information desk. “I want to speak to the manager,” she declared, her voice low and tight. She wouldn’t let them profit from her life. She would dismantle this whole operation, piece by piece, until nothing remained of the fabricated Maya Jones.
