The letter arrived, crisp and official. A fence. He imagined the precise symmetry of the thing, the way it would block his view. He felt a hot flash of anger.

He drove to the hardware store and bought a can of bright purple spray paint. Returning home, he marched over to the neighbor’s side of the line and started defacing the existing posts, a crude rendering of cartoon figures.

He worked quickly, his hand moving with a furious energy. He wanted to make it clear what he thought of this whole charade.

He saw his neighbor, Mr. Davis, standing at his window, arms crossed, watching him. He raised a hand in a mocking salute.
