The truth had cracked open like a bad egg. Chloe had been pretending to be a surgeon. The charity gala, now, felt like an insult. Her friend, Emily, was dressed in a shimmering gown, talking shop with other “esteemed” guests. Chloe found herself gravitating towards the overflowing champagne fountain. She kept refilling her glass, the bubbles tickling her nose, and made sure her laughter was loud, bordering on abrasive.
