The sign, freshly painted, declared the closure. "The Book Nook: Farewell." Emily choked back a sob. She loved this place. It was her sanctuary. She grabbed the door handle, her knuckles white.

She pushed through the door. The familiar scent of old paper usually calmed her. Today, it filled her with rage. The owner, Mr. Henderson, was behind the counter, gently shelving the last few books. He looked up, surprised.

“Mr. Henderson,” she said, her voice tight, “I’ll buy the place.” She spoke before considering the practicalities. The books seemed to whisper at her, beckoning her to stay. She was sure she could make it work. She would make it work.
