The house felt too big, too empty. Sarah felt the overwhelming impulse to leave this haunted place. Her brother, Mark, was busy in the garage, tinkering with their grandmother’s old car. He was planning to make a shed out of it, or something. He was doing this to spite her, she thought.

She had to get out. It felt like she was being slowly suffocated by its history. She stood in front of the window, tears pricking her eyes.

"Sarah? You alright?"

He was so calm, so infuriatingly pragmatic. She took a deep breath, pushing the impulse to run away down. The house, she thought. She would fix the house. She went over to the stove and began to cook.
